I am obsessed with herringbone floors. Whether it is wood, tile or stone, it’s the most chic flooring design on the market. Details are the most important in terms of design and a touch like this makes all the difference in an interior space. Structural, decorative and engaging herringbone floors date back to the 5th century in Roman architecture and were also a feature of Gothic Revival architecture.
History Lesson: Filippo Brunelleschi, a master goldsmith was commissioned in 1418 to build the octagonal dome in The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy. According to Wikipedia, “Brunelleschi used a herringbone brick pattern to transfer the weight of the freshly laid bricks to the nearest vertical ribs of the non-circular dome.” How cool is that?
I adore the contrast of the black and white; here the slate herringbone floor is perfectly amazing!
